October berries

october6, originally uploaded by katiemuffett.

I shot this sprig on a vague hope of getting any light at all. It was sunset, and I was facing roughly NW with trees behind me. There weren’t any little branches as perfect as this one, or that extended as far on the path. I had to at least try!

I tend to leave my aperture tiny when shooting nature, as I’m always drawn to details like these berries. I can’t afford a medium telephoto yet, so I wind my 35mm down to 1.8, open the shutter a little longer than my meter reading and hold very, very still. I’m told the effect is very similar.
