I always find it difficult to photograph trees, as I tend to feel more comfortable with smaller things that are eye-level or lower. Trees have complexity and grandeur that I feel is usually cheapened by 2-D media.
Capturing a more accessible object provides a very helpful, narrow scope for representation. Lofty subjects like trees, however, exhibit more than one expression and to a very broad audience. I think an artist is required to put in adequate contemplation of these great creatures to reproduce them.
I made several passes with this tree at varying distances, and almost bailed completely. I finally went for broke and took three shots with as many different settings. It felt like a lengthy courting – hence the song associated with this shoot.
