Spineless Thorns

QEpark51, originally uploaded by katiemuffett.

Thorns are – for me anyway – the lonely stalkers of nature. They lie in wait to hurt anything or anyone that meets them. Though most of their existence is spent hurting nothing and no one at all; just silently asserting their twisted menace among gentle moss and baby ferns.

I dread seeing them during walks, holding their tyranny over the forest. Perhaps this is why I’ve chosen an equally ominous track by Radiohead. This menacing verse plays over the sound of children shouting and laughing:

Sing/
Us a song/
A song to keep us warm/
There’s such a chill/
Such a chill

No, I do not like thorns.
